DEARBORN, Mich. — Ford's futurity is bright, the company says. It will push electrification — are you lot ready for a hybrid F-150? — across much of the line and aims to surpass Toyota as the No. i seller of electrified vehicles past 2022. Information technology will put OnStar-similar telematics on all its vehicles, make standard a core of commuter-aid and safety features called Co-Pilot360, and by 2022 have the industry's youngest lineup. Ford executives, including new CEO Jim Hackett, laid out the future at a quickly chosen media briefing and backrounder for near 125 editors, writers, and analysts.

The Co-Pilot360 organization raised eyebrows once when Ford said it will make standard blind spot detection, and in one case once again when it turns out Ford won't include adaptive prowl control standard in its safety packet, as competitors Honda, Hyundai and Toyota are doing.

Ford says performance cars, pickups and crossovers will all have electrified versions soon.

Ford's Broad Brushstrokes for Future Cars and Tech

Hackett, named CEO final May, talked about the hereafter: "There is a new era of technology led by bogus intelligence, neural networks learning from the miles they've driven, and vehicle connectivity to the cloud to empower linkages between vehicles and their environments." Ford intends to make 4G LTE telematics standard by 2022. With that, Ford can offer more services to owners and it can practise over-the-air updates to the car, starting with Sync 3 updates and perchance expanding to more than modules.

Past 2022, Ford will have 8 crossovers in its showrooms and more pickups besides. By 2022, one-half of Ford'south sales volume will be crossovers, the company estimates. Its biggest seller is probable to remain the F-Serial pickup. "Our F-Series concern was $41 billion terminal twelvemonth," said Jim Farley, president of Ford global markets, adding that it's "a larger business organization than Coca-Cola and Nike."

Ford's lineup will exist newer, with more up-to-date tech, drivetrains, and driver assists. By 2022, Ford will have an average showroom age (time from pattern to beingness in the showroom) of 3.3 years, versus 5.7 years now.

Hackett promised an "all-in button on hybrid-electrics [and plug-in hybrids] on high-book profitable vehicles. A the hybrid version of the F-150 tin be used every bit a contractor's generator."

Ford will roll out a new safety suite, Co-Pilot360, starting in 2022. It has blind spot detection but non adaptive cruise control.

Co-Pilot360: Add Some, Leave Some Out

Ford's Farley said, "We are gong to strengthen the trust of our customers have in us as a brand. The latest case is how nosotros are making advanced driver-help technologies standard on most of ours cars, trucks and SUVs." The Co-Pilot360 parcel rolls out with the 2022 Ford Edge midsize crossover and Edge ST performance version. It includes:

  • Lane proceed assist, significant information technology detects when the automobile drifts out of lane and pushes information technology dorsum into the lane. But it won't center the car in the lane;
  • Blind spot detection (blind spot data system to Ford) and rear cross traffic alarm;
  • Automatic emergency braking, including frontwards collision alert and pedestrian detection;
  • Automatic high beams;
  • Rear fill-in camera (which virtually every machine has at present; information technology's a legal requirement for cars built as of May 2022).

Co-Pilot360 lacks adaptive cruise control. That's standard on Honda Sensing and Toyota TSS, the much-talked-most safety packages standard on virtually every Honda and Toyota. Conversely, Honda and Toyota lack bullheaded spot detection. Hyundai appears to exist ane-upping them all. Its new Santa Atomic number 26 (formerly called Santa Fe Sport) rolls in the best of all three: ACC, BSD and LKA

Ford couldn't give a clear reason for omitting adaptive prowl command, instead circling back to driver inquiry that says BSD is the 2d-most-wanted driver assistance feature afterwards a fill-in photographic camera, which is on virtually cars now. On the guild of 95 percentage of drivers who've had BSD want it on their side by side car. Ford will offer a package that includes both ACC and navigation. Ford several times talked about taking a leadership position in electrification and safety. It would have been clearer leadership if Ford made ACC and blind spot detection standard. The company in a statement said, "Ford [will be] offering even more premium commuter-assist technologies, including adaptive cruise control with cease and go and lane centering, evasive steering aid and mail-collision braking in North America."

Speaking of navigation, Ford deserves credit for integrating Waze through its Sync AppLink software. Translation: Even if yous own an iPhone, you'll be able to run Waze on your Ford.

The all-new 2022 Lincoln Navigator, out last year, was North American Truck of the Year. It sold 10,523 units in 2022, about the same every bit the year earlier.

Lincoln: More SUVs Likewise

The focus was generally on Ford Thursday. Non much was said nearly Lincoln, other than than Lincoln likewise, will have more crossovers and SUVs in its time to come lineup. Some Issues of Ford's Own Making

Ford'south coming together was a combination of an on-the-tape briefing plus an unveiling of eight vehicles in its Product Evolution Center (but two of them sedans), which were shown and described off-the-tape. Then the visitor made available a darkish photograph of one, a small off-roader. Ford was hoping the assembled journalists would help tell Ford's upbeat vision of the future — and there are skilful parts.

While Ford is the largest-selling brand in the United states, it has had mixed luck of late. The pending 2022 Ford Border crossover should be a strong seller, and other automakers are imitating Edge and Nissan Murano: midsize, two rows, upscale feel at mainstream pricing. The F-Series pickup is the best-selling vehicle in the Us, with 896,764 sold in 2022. The Ford Sync infotainment system finally works afterwards a decade of tinkering.

Just: The one time-promising C-Max Energi small crossover / hybrid is going away. Investors are looking for improve results and greater efficiencies from Ford's factories. This calendar week Ford announced a recall of i.iv million cars (Fusion, Lincoln MKZ 2022-2018) considering the steering bike bolt can come loose. Ford Northward American president Raj Nair left abruptly left month because of personal-behavior issues. Ford has not won its share of car reviews lately. It fared poorly on the 2022 JD Ability Vehicle Dependability Written report of reliability later on iii years, placing vi spots from the bottom. The non-Us companies that Ford owned 15 years ago are mostly flourishing: Jaguar, Land Rover, Volvo. Wall Street Journal reviewer Dan Neil dumped on Ford in his review of the Volvo S90 this calendar month, noting:

Ford owned Volvo for years and did naught much with the brand. China'due south Geely took over, invested $ten billion, and at present…Us sales of Ford's premium Lincoln make have been brackish for years and were down 23.four percent in February, fifty-fifty with the high demand for the new Lincoln Navigator. The trend lines suggest Volvo will soon outsell Lincoln in its home market, fifty-fifty though the latter is an American icon, has more twice the number of dealerships as Volvo, and most US consumers couldn't find Sweden on a map.
